About the Lab
About the Mente Program
The Mathematics Lab began life in early 2002 as a joint project between the Math Department Tutoring Program and the Math Enrichment through Technology Program (MEnTe). The Tutoring Program provided energetic and knowledgeable peer tutors for East Los Angeles College math students. The MEnTe Program provided a comprehensive learning facility with smart classrooms, a tutoring area, an open computer lab, and technical support staff.
Title V funding for the MEnTe Program ended in late 2004 and the two programs were formally combined into the Mathematics Lab at that time. The innovative spirit that was encouraged in the early days of the Mathematics Lab continues to this day. New practices are being developed to help ensure student success in math.
About the Tutoring Lab
The Tutoring Lab Director is Daniel Judge and Viviana Castellon , Tutoring Lab Coordinator is Melanie Xie. They use a peer tutoring program format to assist East Los Angeles College students in the successful completion of their math studies. Tutors are on duty Monday through Saturday. The normal operating hours can accommodate many of the non-traditional students who take classes at East Los Angeles College. Students can use the tutoring facilities without an appointment.
This exemplary tutoring program is extremely beneficial for East Los Angeles College students who take advantage of it. Students who receive tutoring are more successful than their counterparts who do not receive tutoring. Another benefit of the program is that the tutors--who already have a high level of math skill--gain even more confidence in math, science, and engineering programs.
